Steam-activated coconut shell carbon, iodine number 1000+ mg/g, 200–325 mesh — the standard food-grade powder for capsules, cosmetics and beverage filtration.
Coconut shell is the preferred feedstock for ingestible and column applications for structural reasons rather than marketing ones. It yields a hard, predominantly microporous carbon with high surface area, low ash and excellent attrition resistance — meaning it does not crumble into fines in a packed bed or during tableting.
Steam-activated rather than chemically activated, so there are no residual activating agents to declare or wash out. At an iodine number above 1000 mg/g it carries ample adsorptive capacity for supplement and cosmetic use, and the 200–325 mesh distribution gives fast adsorption kinetics with the flow properties encapsulation equipment needs.
This is our highest-volume carbon and the grade most New York supplement and cosmetic manufacturers specify by default. Alternative mesh sizes and higher iodine grades are available to order.

200 to 325 mesh is the usual specification for capsules and tablets. It adsorbs quickly and still flows well enough for encapsulation equipment. Finer material can bridge in the hopper; coarser material adsorbs more slowly and feels gritty in oral products.
For ingestible and cosmetic use, yes. Steam activation is purely physical and leaves no residual activating agents such as phosphoric acid or zinc chloride to remove or declare. Chemically activated carbons have their place in industrial duty but are not the right choice for products people consume.
It is a proxy for total surface area and micropore volume, expressed in mg/g. Higher means greater adsorptive capacity for small molecules. Above 900 mg/g is ample for supplement use; grades above 1200 are engineered for demanding filtration and cost more without adding value in a capsule.
